HomeBlocked DrainsBlocked Toilet

A blocked toilet is usually caused by someone flushing too much toilet paper, wet wipes (even the so-called flushable ones), or sanitary products. In older Chatham properties around Gillingham High Street and Strood, the drainage runs are longer and the fall isn't great, so blockages happen more often.

We'll turn up with an auger (a flexible metal cable that breaks up the blockage) or use rods if needed. Most toilet blockages are cleared in under an hour. If it's a persistent problem, we'll check the stack pipe and the external drainage to see if there's a bigger issue downstream.

No call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Signs Your Toilet is Blocked

⚠️

Water rising when you flush

If the water level rises close to the rim when you flush and drains away slowly, there's a blockage in the toilet trap or the waste pipe just beyond it. Don't keep flushing or it'll overflow onto the floor.

⚠️

Gurgling sound when flushing

A gurgling noise means air is trapped in the waste pipe because water can't flow freely past a blockage. It's often accompanied by slow drainage. The blockage might be in the toilet itself or further down the stack.

⚠️

Bowl won't empty properly

If the bowl fills up but doesn't empty fully when you flush, or empties very slowly over several minutes, you've got a partial blockage. It'll get worse if you don't sort it.

⚠️

Bad smell coming from the toilet

If you're getting a sewage smell and the toilet's draining slowly, there's likely a blockage that's causing waste to sit in the pipe. Common in properties around Railway Street where the drains are old and the fall is shallow.

⚠️

Other drains gurgling when toilet flushes

If the sink or bath gurgles when you flush the toilet, there's a blockage in the shared waste pipe or stack. The air displaced by the flush is coming back up through other outlets. This needs sorting quickly.

What to Do Before We Arrive

1

Stop flushing it

Don't keep trying to flush a blocked toilet. Each flush adds more water, and if it's completely blocked, it'll overflow onto the bathroom floor. Just leave it and call us.

2

Turn off the water supply to the cistern

If it's close to overflowing, turn the isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern (usually on the wall behind or beside the toilet). This stops more water getting into the cistern so nobody can accidentally flush it while you're waiting.

3

Mop up any overflow

If it's already overflowed, mop it up with old towels (not your good ones). Toilet overflow is contaminated water, so wash your hands thoroughly and bin the towels if they're past saving. Disinfect the floor after.

4

Don't use chemicals

Don't pour bleach, drain cleaner, or chemical unblockers down a blocked toilet. They don't work on solid blockages, they make the water caustic (dangerous for us), and they damage old pipes. Just leave it for us to clear mechanically.

5

Check if other toilets are working

If you've got another toilet in the house, check if that's draining fine. If both are blocked, the problem's in the shared stack pipe or the outside drain, not the individual toilets. Tell us when you call so we bring the right kit.

How We Unblock Toilets

1

Assess the blockage

We'll check what's been flushed, how the water's behaving, and whether other drains in the house are affected. If it's just the one toilet, it's likely a blockage in the trap or the waste pipe close by. If multiple drains are affected, it's further downstream.

2

Clear the blockage mechanically

We'll use a toilet auger (a flexible cable with a corkscrew end) to break up or hook out the blockage. For tougher blockages, we'll use drain rods from outside if there's an access point. We don't use plungers on modern toilets as they can crack the pan.

3

Test the flush

Once we've cleared the blockage, we'll flush the toilet several times to make sure it's draining properly and there's no secondary blockage further down. If it's still slow, we'll investigate further.

4

Check for underlying issues

If the toilet blocks regularly, we'll check the waste pipe fall, look for any dips or bad joints, and advise if there's a bigger problem. Persistent blockages often mean poor installation, a collapsed pipe, or root intrusion in the outside drain.

Common Causes of Blocked Toilets in Chatham

Most toilet blockages in Chatham are down to people flushing things they shouldn't. Wet wipes are the worst offenders. They don't break down like toilet paper, they catch on rough joints and build up into a solid mass.

Wet wipes and sanitary products

Even wet wipes labelled 'flushable' don't break down properly. They catch in the pipe bends and accumulate. Sanitary products, nappies, cotton buds, all cause blockages. If it's not toilet paper, bin it, don't flush it.

Too much toilet paper at once

Flushing half a roll in one go can block the trap, especially in older low-flush toilets or toilets with a weak flush. Modern toilets handle it better, but it's still asking for trouble. If you've used a lot, flush twice.

Foreign objects

Kids flush toys, phones get dropped in, air freshener blocks fall in. Anything solid that gets past the trap usually lodges in a bend further down. We've pulled out all sorts: toothbrushes, razors, even a rubber duck once.

Poor waste pipe installation

Some properties in Chatham, especially post-war builds and 1960s council estates like Luton, have badly installed waste pipes with insufficient fall or sharp bends. The toilet works fine for years, then one day it blocks and keeps blocking. The only fix is re-routing the waste pipe properly.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does it cost to unblock a toilet in Chatham?
A straightforward toilet blockage costs £85 to £120 to clear. If it's stubborn (wet wipes wedged in tight, foreign object stuck in the trap), expect £120 to £150. If we need to remove the toilet to access the blockage, that's more. We'll quote you before we start.
How long does it take to unblock a toilet?
Most toilet blockages are cleared in 20 to 40 minutes. We'll auger the trap, rod it if needed, flush it through, and test it. If the blockage is further down the waste pipe or in the stack, it can take longer.
Can I unblock it myself with a plunger?
You can try a plunger on older toilets with a simple trap, but modern close-coupled toilets can crack if you plunge too hard. Chemical unblockers don't work on solid blockages and can damage pipes. If it's properly blocked, call us. Trying to fix it yourself often makes it worse.
Why does my toilet keep blocking?
Recurring blockages usually mean there's an underlying problem: insufficient fall on the waste pipe, a dip where waste collects, a rough joint catching debris, or a partial collapse further down. We'll investigate and advise whether it needs the waste pipe rerouting or a section replacing.
Will you have to remove the toilet?
Usually not. Most blockages are in the trap or just beyond it, and we can clear them with an auger or rods. If there's a foreign object wedged tight or the blockage is right at the pan connector, we might need to unbolt the toilet to get access. We'll tell you before we do that.
What if it's blocked outside, not in the toilet?
If the toilet won't flush and the outside gully or manhole is overflowing, the blockage is in the external drainage, not the toilet itself. We'll rod or jet the outside drain to clear it. That's a separate job, priced at £95 to £180 depending on access and severity.
Can you clear blocked toilets in flats?
Yes, but access can be tricky in flats if the waste pipe runs through other flats or there's no external access point. We'll do our best to clear it from your end, but if it's a shared stack and the blockage is in the communal section, you might need to involve the landlord or building management.
Do you charge more for evening or weekend callouts?
Our phone lines are open Mon-Thurs 8.30am-6pm and Fri 9am-4pm. Engineers can be deployed outside phone line hours for emergencies. If you need urgent help, always call or use the contact form and we'll do our best to help you.
